How Not to Get Hit by a Car While Running

How Not to Get Hit by a Car While Running

Cars and Runners do not mix.

When the weather gets nicer, you tend to see more and more runners or cyclists out. Makes sense right? Why stay in the gym when you can get some fresh air and maybe a tan outside when exercising? It is a win-win situation in my book! However, it seems that regardless of this, drivers do not pay attention to runners.

Last year, I almost got hit multiple times while running. And let me tell you, I don’t wear all black or run at night. It was clear as day and I wear neon colored clothing to make myself extra visible. However, it doesn’t seem to make a difference. My biggest close call was when I was crossing over a driveway by a bank when a car pulled out and I had to jump into the street. Luckily, I didn’t jump into oncoming traffic!

Tips for Runners:

  1. Don’t run in the dark without some sort of “flashy” lights.
  2. Don’t assume that drivers see you. More and more drivers are distracted by texting, talking on the phones, changing the radio station, putting their makeup on or just too dumb to see you.
  3. Wear bright clothing! I have neon green/pink shoes and I always wear a bright shirt.
  4. Make sure you stop too at intersections or driveways. Drivers don’t always stop nor look both ways before turning.

Tips for Drivers:

  1. Look both ways.

  1. Stop for Runners or cyclists.
  2. Stop using devices that are distracting. This is just a good law in general that should be followed.

Have you had a close encounter?

Do you run in populated streets or areas?

Crock pot Chicken Noodle Soup

Good Evening!!

Yesterday, my dad and I had a craving for chicken noodle soup. This lead to us putting together a recipe for chicken noodle soup in the crock pot! We spent last night prepping so that this morning he could just through in the chicken and turn it on!

DAd's chicken noodle

I didn’t really have a good bowl, so this worked!

Dad’s Homemade Chicken Soup! Crock pot style!

  • 1 chopped onion
  • 3 sliced carrots
  • 3 sliced celery stalks
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
  • Dash of leaf thyme
  • 3 tablespoons parsley
  • 2 tablespoons dried dill
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 chicken breasts
  • 4 cups chicken stock- We used Swanson broth
  • 3 cups water- add more if needed
  • 8oz egg noodles

Place all ingredients into a crock pot except noodles. Cover and cook on LOW for 10 hours. One hour before serving, remove chicken and take out bones if any. Add noodles and turn to HIGH for 30 minutes.

Finished product- minus some soup….we dug in before I could snap a picture!

As for the workout today. I hit the gym and did Body Pump then 45 minutes of cardio.

Here’s proof! Ha!

Well I am off to enough the rest of my soup and catch up on some good ol’ television.

Until tomorrow, good night!

Why do you Run?

why do you run

Why do you run? People ask me all the time. Tara, why do you run so much? What do you get out of it? I’ve never been able to pin post one reason why I run. After asking myself this many times, here are my answers:

It is better than walking.

It is time when my mind can wander.

I can make it competitive whether it’s on the treadmill or while running in races.

It is great way to exercise. Duh!

To stay in shape.

To push myself harder than I normally would,

Set examples for my friends and family.

Inspire others to get out and be healthy.

I run because I am addicted to the runner’s high.

Running turns a bad day into a good day.

I run because I just love to run.

Now, ask yourself the same. Why do you run? Why do you partake in the sport you love?

Treadmill Debate

Treadmill vs. Outside Debate

Okay, am I the only one that has a love hate relationship with the treadmill? Hopefully not. I’ve read mixed reviews; some people prefer the treadmill while others cannot stand using them. I am somewhere in the middle. If I have to run on a treadmill, I better have a good book on my kindle to suck me in, if not then I am SOL. I get bored running on a treadmill; the scenery is the same and ya just boring. I seem to get tired quicker, because there is no change. When I am outside, I can tune everything out, stare at cars, pretend that I am racing them in stop and go traffic and so on. Basically, I can just push myself more outside and I can choose my hills/course.

My longest run on a treadmill to date is 10 miles; I was sucked into a book on my kindle that day apparently. It probably wasn’t the fastest run, but I did work.

I find it the hardest to keep up with my runs during the winter months when it isn’t nice out. The treadmill is like a curse.

Thanks for reading my evening rambles/complaints about running.

Five Things Friday

Five Things Friday! 4/26/2013

1. I love that feeling when you see that you saved 80 cents off each gallon of gas. Heck yes I will fill up! I don’t remember the last time I got gas for 3.13 a gallon and I only spent $40.00.

Look at that!

2. I cannot get enough of this beautiful weather. Mother Nature is teasing us!

3. I read two books this week. Ekk, I am a bit of a book worm. I highly recommend If I Stay and Where She Went by Gayle Foreman. Stay tuned for their book reviews!

4. Where did April go? It came and went so quickly, but that is okay because I am ready for some warm weather!

5. Totally loving the fact that my work made our goals and earned the day after the 4th of July off! Wahoo! I know July is about 2 months away, but it is about the little things that we look forward too.

My goal is to incorporate Five Things Friday every week like my fellow bloggers!

20 Minute Incline Workout

Good Evening!

What a beautiful day today was here in Seattle. It actually hit 75 degrees! Yes, 75 and I am not hallucinating….

Since the  weather was absolutely gorgeous, I knew it would be a great day for a run outside. I went to the gym and decided to do my usual loop around downtown Issaquah.

Because I wasn’t used to the temperature outside, it was a slower run than normal. But hey 6 miles isn’t bad! I am sure I got a weee bit pink too.

I always wondering what I look like when I am running. I’ve seen past race pictures and they aren’t so pretty.

I crack up every time I see this picture. It is soooo true!

When I got back to the gym, I decided to do an incline treadmill workout.

20 Minute Incline Treadmill workout

Oh man it is a good one. I kind of made it up on the fly, but it will make your booty burn!! Burn baby burn!

I figured since I was on a leg kick with my run and treadmill incline workout, doing a few leg workouts on the machines would be good. Then I finished up with a good ab burner.

20-30 abs

Oh man, my abs were burning. Feel free to use a medicine ball with your Russian twists. I use a 10 lb ball.

Please tell me that I am not the only one who feels this way while on a treadmill….

Running treadmill race

I swear every time I run on the treadmill someone decides to use the treadmill right next to me when there’s obviously 20 other machines around. If you want to race, I am always down. haha!

In case you weren’t aware…..

heck ya its friday

Well technically, it is still Thursday for me….but who cares!

I’ll leave you on that note.
